On Saturday, Dec. 14 Ely had two teams compete in the First Lego Robotics Challenge in Hermantown. First Lego Robotics is a program from First Inspires.

In this program, teams must program a Lego Spike Prime robot to solve missions on the board. At the competition the two teams, “The Sassy Sea Otters” and the “Let’s Get Kraken,” competed with 36 other teams.

In addition, the teams had to research and present on a real world topic related to this year’s theme of “Submerged.”

The Sassy Sea Otters presented their project on “Ghost Nets,” fishing nets in the ocean that break free and float through the ocean catching wildlife.

The Let’s Get Kraken presented their solution to help alleviate plastics in the ocean by preventing plastics from getting into rivers with filters on storm drains.

The Let’s Get Kraken team consisted of five fifth graders, Gordon Smith, Ari Hart, Katelyn Blaeser, Charlie Hway and Talon Fritz. The Sassy Sea Otters consisted of Eleanor Nyquist, Max Gregory, Ava Wohnen, Hoakan Lunn, Grayson Moen, Taran Yarbrough, Owen Kurnava and Liam Kurnava.
