Deer season is now one week away. At Camp Cholesterol we’re getting close to being ready to go. This past weekend it was my daughter Megan and her boyfriend Ben out to help get things done.
Megan and I rode out in my side by side so she could get some grouse hunting in along the way. There were birds around but boy are they skittish. There were several times when we would see a bird, Megan would load the gun and go after it, only to come back empty handed.
Twice she walked back with a bird and she was trying to get her dog Millie to retrieve it. Millie definitely wanted to be out of the wheeler and wherever Megan was but bringing back the bird wasn’t always high on her list.
She did shock us when I put a bird on the side of the grill to be cleaned and later Megan found Millie dining on the uncleaned bird. Retrieving is one thing, eating is another!
There was one stand that needed some work and it was Ben who volunteered to climb up and reattach the strap at the top of the ladder stand to the tree.
I was holding the bottom of the ladder but I’m not sure what I could’ve done if things would have went sideways. Luckily the repairs were made and all was well.
We even had a guest for dinner on Saturday night as my high school buddy Jim Ronn dropped in. That made it four for cards and games of smear were played before and after dinner.
While we were playing cards, Jim’s son Jordan was playing hockey for the Fargo Force. He had a heckuva night on the ice as we tuned in on Jim’s cell phone. Put it this way, at one point Ben said, “I think he scored again.”
Jordan tallied four goals that night, adding to his hat trick with an empty netter to finish off the game.
Jim and I finished off the night with a trip to the sauna. The temp had climbed a bit higher than I like it and there were a few more breaks to get out of the 200 degree heat. Good thing we kept hydrated.
Depending on how things go today for Ely’s volleyball team, Camp Cholesterol could be short a few hunters on the opener. But if Megan’s team is playing at the State Tournament, that’s just fine with me.
Best of luck to all of the deer hunters heading out for the 2024 season. Let’s hope there’s a few bucks hanging on the meat pole. If you take a photo of you or a friend or family member and your buck, email it to [email protected] so we can put it in the paper.
Good luck and be safe!
