Three of my nephews have spent much of their youth out at the shack. They’ve hunted there, rode wheelers, shot guns and blown out birthday candles.
There was a time when Camp Cholesterol could have qualified as a home school during deer season.
Time has passed and their lives have changed. Mitch now lives on the East Coast where he’s married and a proud dad. As a full-time firefighter with a young family, getting back here isn’t easy.
Justin served a stint in the Army including time in Germany before returning to the Twin Cities. He now works full-time for a small company that has him running steady.
Hunter just graduated high school and is in a training program where he may one day be a police officer.
It was Justin who came up last weekend to hang out at the shack with me. We had a list of projects to get done and we actually got to most of them. Well, Justin did… Evan had removed the pine needles off the sauna, outhouse and woodshed, but the shack still needed to be done.
Justin busted out the ladder, grabbed the rake and headed up. The roof on the shack does need to be replaced or at least repaired. So I told Justin to watch where he stepped. Not sure that inspired his confidence.
But he got the job done and there was a major pile of pine needles on the ground surrounding the shack when he put the ladder away. Justin even raked a path to the outhouse.
We also checked trail cameras, did some bird hunting and got the brush cutter running. Somehow we even found time to get the new grill fired up and tested it out with some steaks.
There were also some games of cribbage played and a chance to talk about the upcoming deer season, work, life and whatever else comes up when you’re playing cards.
Just two weekends left now before deer season is here. Where does the time go? We still need to make sure ladders are safe to get into deer stands, plan a menu for three weekends and find enough blaze orange clothing that will keep us toasty.
Hope your shack is in better shape and your deer season is a success!
