This week’s Minnesota DNR Conservation Officer reports

District 6 - Two Harbors COAnthonyBermel(Babbitt) worked the busy MEA weekend. Time was also spent on problem wolf calls, nuisance bear calls, a wildfire investigation and presenting to a career class at MN North Vermilion. Violations for the week included an ATV DWI arrest, operating on a state highway, open container of alcohol, expired registration, passengers under 18 without helmets, unregistered OHM, trespass, fail to transfer watercraft ownership, and leaving bear bait signs out more than 48 hours after the close of the season. Grouse hunting pressure is extremely high in the area.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) checked small game hunters and anglers out enjoying the warm weather. The back roads were busy with road hunters all in a line following each other trying to shoot a grouse. Enforcement action was taken for transport loaded firearms, watercraft registration and license violations.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked small game and youth deer hunting activity. Weather cooperated with the youth hunters and made conditions mild allowing more time in the field. ATV activity was high this week with many hunters out checking deer stands and grouse hunting. Murray also investigated shootfromroadwayand illegal deer baiting activity.

District 5 - Eveleth area CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports youth deer season was relatively quiet as far as violations are concerned. Success in the area for the youth deer hunt appears to be average compared to other years. Several animal complaints were handled throughout the week and Fall fishing on the Rainy River seems to be picking up.

CO Curtis Simonson (International Falls #2) reports checking small game hunters, anglers, and working ATV activity this past week. Trespass complaints were received throughout the area as well. The nice weather had many youth deer hunters out and about with a few having some success.

CO Troy Fondie (Orr) reports monitoring angling and boating activities. Fire danger remains extreme and campfires are prohibited. ATV and small game activities were checked. Complaint of an illegal campfire during burning ban was followed up on. Administrative reporting is on-going. Little to no waterfowl hunting was observed due to a lack of birds. Deer hunters report very little for deer in the area.

CO Sean Cannon (Cook) spent this week checking small game hunters, anglers and ATV riders taking advantage of perfect weather most of the week. Success was mixed for the small game hunters, with those willing to get out on foot and hit trails less travelled having the best luck. The early youth deer hunt this past weekend was worked, withfewhuntersseen in the woods. It was however a busy weekend with many people out hunting small game, riding ATVs, and getting ready for the upcoming deer season. CO Cannon also assisted St Louis County with an ATV crash and other calls over the weekend.

COAaronLarson(Tower) workedprimarilysmallgame hunting. Larson checked many grouse hunters who all seemedtobehavingsomelevel of success. Very few youth deer hunters were out hunting. Violations were related to ATVs and transporting game illegally. Larson also took wildlife calls and a waterfowl complaint.

CO Duke Broughten (Aurora) spent the week monitoring hunting and ATV activity. Hunters reported limited success. Few youth hunters were observed taking advantage of the youth deer season. ATV activity remained high due to the warmer weather. CO Broughten also fielded calls regarding nuisance animals and youth hunting regulations.
