The Vermilion Ironhawks are joining other volleyball teams across the country in raising awareness about breast cancer.
Tuesday is “Dig Pink” night at the Vermilion gymnasium, as the Ironhawks host Hibbing in their home finale.
Vermilion will be clad in pink rather than its usual blue and gold as part of the Dig Pink campaign.
The host Ironhawks will also look to reverse a season- long losing skid.
Vermilion fell to 0-18 Wednesday, dropping a Northern Division home matchup to Central Lakes 25-5, 25-12, 25-15.
Despite the lopsided defeat, there were highlights for the Ironhawks, according to head coach Aaron Bender. “I felt like compared to our last couple of matches we played better,” said Bender. “There’s still the consistency issue. But all in all they’re giving everything they can every night and that’s all I can ask for.”
Isabelle Mattson, a freshman from Mt. Iron-Buhl, paced Vermilon with four kills while teammates Jade Starkman and Katy Ellis had two each.
Vermilion’s Tatina Whiting and Kyla Berger each had a kill while Aubree Gerlovich of Ely contributed eight set assists and a kill.
Starkman had a solo block while Gerlovich and Mattson each assisted on a block.
After the home contest with Hibbing, Vermilion wraps up the season Wednesday at Mesabi.
