As the regular season winds down, Northeast Range/Ely is making continued improvement in the water.
The high school girls swimming team fell to International Falls Tuesday, as the host Broncos prevailed 106-69 in dual meet action near the border.
But the Nighthawks, who are starting to prepare for section competition in early- November had another strong day, according to head coach Cheri DeBeltz.
“We may not have come out with a win but it was another strong showing,” she said.
Senior Anna Larson and junior Via DeBeltz were both two-time individual winners for the Nighthawks, and Tuuli Koivisto also grabbed a first-place finish.
Larson won both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly in narrow fashion.
She swam to victory in the 50 in 27.95 seconds, and pulled out a win in the butterfly in 1:11.05, prevailing by six-tenths of a second against the Broncos’ Sylvia Valenzuela.
Via DeBeltz captured the 200 in 2:19.61, with almost six seconds to spare, and she cruised in the 500 en route to a time of 6:16.29 - about 23 seconds ahead of her nearest foe.
Koivisto won the 100 backstroke in dominant fashion, finishing in 1:15.16 and with more than eight seconds to spare.
The only NRE second- place finish went to Koivisto (2:49.28) in the 200 individual medley, and she teamed with Jorden Borchert, Brynn Larson and Ivy Ohlhauser to place second in the 200 medley relay (2:20.76).
Anna Larson, Brynn Larson, Koivisto and DeBeltz combined to take second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:58.32). and it was Larson, Larson, Ohlhauser and De-Beltz taking second in the 400 freestyle relay (4:26.94).
Individual thirds went to Jorden Borchert (200 freestyle) and Brynn Larson (100 freestyle), while Jorden Borchert, Raegan Borchert, Isla Carlson and Lucy Luthens teamed to place third in the 400 freestyle relay.
• In junior varsity action at International Falls, NRE pulled off a 52-23 win.
The Nighthawks’ Avery bee won both the 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle, with Isla Carlson (200 freestyle), Nicole Freking (300 freestyle), and Lindsay Israel (100 backstroke) grabbing firsts.
Also in first in JV action were the 200 freestyle relay team of Bela Moskowitz, Bee, Nicole Freking and Elena Freking, and the 400 freestyle foursome of Moon Vetos-Keen, Bee, Nicole Freking and Elena Freking.
• NRE also took part in the True Team Section Meet, held last Saturday at Grand Rapids.
The Nighthawks placed 10th among 12 teams.
