Swimmers shine in Lumberjack Log Jam at Cloquet

Northeast Range/Ely made its mark at a weekend high school girls swimming meet at Cloquet.

Both Anna Larson and Via DeBeltz came home with first-place finishes and medals from the Lumberjack Log Jam held on Saturday.

Both also were part of a Nighthawks relay team, joining Tuuli Koivisto and Brynn Larson - that won the 200 freestyle.

It was part of a solid overall day for the Nighthawks at the event.

“We swam really well, taking third,” said head coach Cheri DeBeltz. “We were able to take home some medals in some events.”

Topping that list were Anna Larson and Via De-Beltz, who both captured a pair of top-three individual finishes.

Larson sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle, edging out a Duluth Denfeld swimmer and winning in 27.49 seconds.

DeBeltz’s win came in the 500, with the junior cruising home and racking up an 18-second margin of victory en route to a time of 6:15.63.

In the 200 freestyle, De-Beltz was the runner-up in 2:19.35 while Larson placed third in the 100 butterfly (1:12.36).

Larson, DeBeltz, Brynn Larson and Koivisto teamed up to take first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:57.41.

It was Anna Larson, Brynn Larson, DeBeltz and Ivy Ohlhauser who formed a third-place 400 freestyle relay quartet with a time of 4:27.08. They fell short of second place by about a half-second.

Ohlhauser placed fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:08.90) and Brynn Larson was sixth (1:09.11) in the same event.

Koivisto placed sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:54.07), Jorden Borchert took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.15) and Ohlhauser added an eighth (2:32.45) in the 200 freestyle.

NRE’s Koivisto, Jorden Borchert, Sabrah Hart and Ohlhauser combined to place sixth in the 200 medley relay.

Raegan Borchert, Lucy Luthens, Isla Carlson and Maddie Johnson formed a sixth-place 200 freestyle relay unit.

As a team, NRE picked up 402 points to place third behind host Cloquet-Esko- Carlton (535) and Stella Maris Academy (436). NRE was ahead of both Superior and Duluth Denfeld.

• In dual meet action Tuesday, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton scored a 55-39 victory over the Nighthawks.

DeBeltz was a double winner for NRE, taking both the 500 freestyle in 6:23.26, and the 200 in 2:18.39.

Anna Larson added another individual win, taking the 100 butterfly in 1:10.64 and finishing a tight second in the 50 freestyle, falling by .3 seconds to the Lumberjacks’ Nattie Butler.

The Nighthawks’ other first came in the 200 freestyle relay, with Anna Larson, Brynn Larson, Koivisto and DeBeltz dominating the race and scoring a 12-second margin of victory with a 1:57.72. finish.

Koivisto bagged second- place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:47.15) and the 100 breaststroke (1:29.28), and Jorden Borchert (2:31.62) was the runner-up in the 200 freestyle.

In the 400 freestyle relay, DeBeltz, Brynn Larson, Ohlhauser and Jorden Borchert were second in 4:35.84.

Thirds went to Moon Vetos- Keen (100 backstroke), Jorden Borchert (100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay combination of Carlson, Johnson, Ohlhasuer and Raegen Borchert.

CEC won the junior varsity contest 63-30, although NRE got three firsts: Ohlhauser (200 freestyle), Brynn Larson (50 butterfly), Raegan Borchert (300 freestyle) and the 400 freestyle relay unit of Vetos-Keen, Avery Bee, Bela Moskowitz and Evelyn Moran.
