This hasn’t been the best year for grouse hunting. The leaves have been enjoying the 80 degree weather and it appears the rain storms and flooding in June really knocked the grouse population for a loop.
But it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and the Vikings had just held on to beat the lowly Packers. So Mary and I hopped into the side by side and followed daughter Megan and boyfriend Ben down the trail.
I wasn’t really worried about shooting a grouse, I was just enjoying being outside after some long days and weeks at work. There’s something about the woods that is more than comforting. It’s like getting a boost of life just for being there.
Each time Ben would stop his wheeler, we would stop and turn the engine off. I’ve found hearing a bird can be as important as seeing it. When Megan raised up the gun and shot, I didn’t know if she was successful or not. We drove up and there was a bird in her hand (which definitely beats two in the bush).
With her Minnesota firearms safety instructor hat on, she held the grouse so we could take some photos. First bird of the season.
We’re now in the best time of the year, fall. There’s leaves to watch fall from the trees, deer stands to repair, saunas to take and card games to be played at the shack.
Going to put work on hold at times and enjoy life.
