The Forest Service partners, and area communities are working together to share knowledge on hazardous fuels reduction options to improve forest health and promote wildfire resilient landscapes.
The forests of northeastern Minnesota are fire dependent and need periodic low intensity fire to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and promote a balanced ecosystem. Prescribed fire is an important part of forest management and a beneficial means of achieving cross-cultural stewardship objectives.
Living in and around a fire dependent landscape comes with the responsibility of being a fire adapted community.
Dovetail Partners and The Nature Conservancy are working with the Forest Service in the Ely area to connect landowners and land managers with programs and competitive grant opportunities to promote land stewardship and fire resiliency across the landscape. There are also opportunities for public outreach and education for area communities.
Landowners have several resources available to them through the Minnesota Arrowhead Region – Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) Network. The MN FAC Network works to empower communities to build wildfire resiliency in communities throughout northeast Minnesota. Visit the MN FAC Network page.
