Registration for fall classes through Reflections Dance Company is now open. Classes start on Oct. 6, and run through Dec. 4, with a showcase on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 pm. Sign-up for classes at www.northernlakesarts.org and pay online, or bring cash or check to the first class. New this session are intro levels for Social Swing Dance, Beginning Adult Jazz and Tap, and Advanced Technique class. The public is welcome. The book fair will be held Oct. 7-11, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. with extended hours (8 a.m. - 7 p.m.) on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

“Living With Cancer Group” gathering on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Ely Senior Center at 6 p.m. All cancer patients, survivors family, and friends are welcomed to attend.

Become an Ely Tree Steward volunteer. This free UMN training will give you the knowledge to help care for trees in your community. As a Tree Steward, you will be trained in: basic tree biology and identification, best practices for planting, mulching, watering, staking, fertilizing, and trunk protection, developmental pruning of young trees, pruning suckers and sprouts, and common tree disease, pests, and defects. The training will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 8-11 a.m. at Minnesota North College - Theater. After training, supervised volunteers will be able to help the City of Ely plant trees in parks and boulevards, care for newly planted trees and monitor tree health.

A Pile Burning Workshop will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon in room 104 on the Vermilion campus. The event is free to attend, no registration required. Participants will relocate to the Forest Service building after the classroom portion for hands-on activities (bring outdoor clothing and boots). Learn about basic fire behavior and how to remove and safely pile burn hazardous woody debris. Experienced wildland firefighters will be present and there will be a live pile burning demonstration if weather and wildfire risk conditions allow.

At the Ely Public Library on Saturday, October 12 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. will be a Wild Wild West Mystery Event for adults and teens in grades 9-12. Each participant will have a custom written role to play, similar to a murder mystery dinner party. This event is expected to last about three hours; participants should plan to stay for the entire period as leaving early will affect everyone’s ability to solve the mystery. Also, everyone will need to pre-register for this event by 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7 in order to give staff enough time to prep all the individual roles. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

The Sectionals, the premier jazz ensemble of Northern Minnesota, will perform at Ely’s Historic State Theater on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. The Sectionals, hailing from all across the Iron Range, cover a broad range of music and genres, in addition to their many jazz standards. Join us Sunday afternoon, October 13th from 4-6PM for this one time concert in the State Theater. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or online at https://movies.elystatetheater. org/movie/the-sectionals-in-concert.

“Elf: The Musical” will be presented by Northern Lakes Arts Association, this must-see production will take you on a magical journey from the North Pole to New York City as Buddy the Elf discovers the true meaning of Christmas and the joy of spreading holiday cheer. NLAA will be bringing back five to six of Ely’s favorite performers from summer shows over the last two years to add extra sparkle and magic to the production. Show dates and times: evening performances: Dec. 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m.; matinee performances: Dec. 14, 15, 20 and 21 at 2 p.m.; pay-whatyou- can performance: Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. Shows will be at the Vermilion Fine Arts Theater. The Ely Ladies of Kaleva will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 15 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Ely Senior Center. The Marsalji Trio will play a program of Finnish music. Anyone interested in Finnish heritage is welcome to attend. Questions can be directed to Sally at 218-760-2036.

Cribbage is being played at the Zenith Apartments at 965 E. Camp St in Ely on Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. Join in, have fun. Bring your own snacks.
