Water back on after eight hours; UPDATE: Boil water advisory lifted

City of Ely: The Department of Health has let us know that our sample results have come back and the BOIL WATER ADVISORY has been LIFTED. Thanks for your patience during these times.

The City of Ely Crews are currently flushing fire hydrants and the water to the city is up and running.  You may have some air pockets in your lines when you first run them.

The City of Ely is currently under a boil water advisory.  During the boil water advisory, boil the water before using it.  Bring the water to a rolling boil for one minute and let it cool before using it. Another option is to use bottled water.  Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food until further notice.

The City of Ely will be sampling water and will let you know when you no longer need to boil your water.

Also, water will be shut off between 4th and 5th Avenue between Harvey and Chapman Street to fix a suspected leaking water service. The water will be shut off before lunch on Wednesday and will be returned to service once the repair has been made.

NOTICE SENT BY CITY OF ELY:

City of Ely water may be contaminated due to loss of pressure.

What should you do?

Do not drink water before boiling it or use a safe alternative source.

Bring all water to a full, rolling boil, let it boil for one minute or longer, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in water.

A safe alternative source includes bottled water.

After the system has restored pressure and lifted the advisory, its recommended consumers flush their building plumbing systems.

What may be the health effects?

Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches.

Symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, it is recommended you seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking water.

What happened? What is being done?

On September 10, 2024 we experienced a Water Main Break below the Water Tower and the water was shut off to the town. There is an increased chance that the drinking water may contain bacteria that could make you sick. The affected area includes all of the City of Ely Drinking Water. We are taking the following steps to correct the problem: as of 12:20am the City of Ely Crews are flushing hydrants and will be taking samples of the water. We will let you know when tests show the water is safe to drink and you no longer need to boil your water.

Please share this information with other people who drink this water and who may not have received this notice directly (people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, businesses, etc.). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
