Ely Operations Director Harold Langowski announced at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday the city will be without water for the next four hours.
"The entire town is out of water," said Langowski. "It's going to be four hours until we can pump this out and then we will have a boil order. Right now everybody is out of water. We're going to have to flush all the lines and then have a boil order."
Repairs were being made to a main city water line when the valve came off the line.
"We had a small leak we were repairing, we went to remove the pipe and the valve came loose," said Langowski. "We were within three hours of having it fixed and now we're over two hours behind. There's no way of feeding the town until we get this fixed."
Langowski said the city water tower and the reserve tanks at the water plant are currently full.
"If we need water we have water for fire or other use, we just can't pump and can't feed," said Langowski. "If people still have water they can drink it but once everything is restored we will flush the lines and have a boil order."
