Because of a scheduling snafu, the Vermilion Ironhawks’ first two home games of the fall were an hour down the road.
The community college volleyball team had to travel to Virginia to take on Northland and Alexandria in consecutive Northern Division tilts last weekend.
Neither came with good outcomes for a rebuilding Ironhawks team, as powerful Northland held them to just two opening-set points in a 25-2, 25-8, 25-11 sweep in an Aug. 30 contest in the gym as Mesabi Community College.
The following morning, it was more of the same as Alexandria rolled to a 25-4, 25-11, 25-5 victory, For Vermilion, which has only one sophomore, serve receive was difficult in both games as Northland delivered 22 aces and Alexandria recorded 17.
The Ironhawks also reached double digits in points in only two sets overall.
Isabelle Mattson, Keara Buttefield, Jade Starkman and Katy Ellis all had kills for Vermilion in the matchup with Northland.
On Saturday, Aubree Gerlovich of Ely had four digs and a couple of set assists, while sophomore Tatiana Whiting added two kills.
Mattson, Butterfield, and Ellis all had kills and Starkman notched an ace serve.
Vermilion is set to travel to Ironwood, Mich., this weekend to take on Gogebic.
The Ironhawks won’t have a true home game until Sept. 21 at the Vermilion Gymnasium.
