Letter to the Editor: It’s been eight years, and we are back!
RideMN1 Inc. a nonprofit cancer awareness organization (RideMN1.org) is coming to Ely.
Our goal is to increase cancer awareness and encourage healthy lifestyles and getting recommended screenings. We do this by riding bicycles across Minnesota each September. Our name comes from Minnesota Highway 1, which was our inaugural route.
Our 2024 route takes us from Oslo to Silver Bay, with overnight stops in Warren, Grygla, Red Lake, Effie, Cook and Ely - with our minor deviations, a total of 402 miles.
We are riding from Cook to Ely on Thursday (9/12) and headed for our camp at Cliff Wold’s just outside of Winton.
We are laying over in Ely on Friday (9/13) and plan to visit the Wolf and Bear exhibits.
We would like to acknowledge our local ‘partners’ - Britton’s Cafe, Boathouse Brewpub & Restaurant, and Grand Ely Lodge - and Cliff Wold’s.
We are a relatively small group and limit registrations to 40. Even so, we have participants from Texas, Idaho, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. We are the only Bike Tour that crosses Minnesota. We tend to be a little more senior with our typical Rider being in their 60’s, numerous 70 year olds and one in their 80’s!
We are on a mission. Everyone knows someone that has been impacted by cancer. In our 7 years we have lost 2 of our past Riders to cancer. No one said this would be easy - but it still hurts.
We know early detection significantly improves outcomes. Get the recommended screening - colon, breast, skin, and now insurance pays for lung screenings. If you are a smoker, or quit in the past few years, ask your doctor about this low dose chest x-ray. Caught in the early stages, we can stop it.
Strides are being made every day. Treatments are changing and outcomes are improving.
So, if you see a bunch of bikers around the area, give a shout out or toot your horn - we are on a mission.
