State Fair time is here. If you can’t make it down south this year, don’t worry. You can make State Fair-Style Corn Dogs right in your own kitchen.
Chad Loewen was kind enough to share the recipe he makes for the Knights of Columbus bingos at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely four times per year.
Chad said it is a simple recipe he found online years ago and they taste just like the corn dogs you get at the State Fair.
Chad has done his research. He said that each year, the fair goes through 115 tons of batter. That is enough batter to fill an Olympic swimming pool. It takes 24 tons of hot dogs to use up all that batter. If the corn dogs were laid out endto- end, they would span 37 miles. Imagine a line of corn dogs spanning from Highway 21 in Babbitt, all the way to Virginia!
In recent years, Minnesota State Fair corn dogs have ranged in price from $7-$18 each. Chad sells them for $1.50 apiece because he wants everyone to be able to afford one and all proceeds go to local charities.
He usually aims for one corn dog for every two people in attendance, which averages about 60-70 corn dogs. That is usually enough, but they sometimes run out.
Chad is also part of the locally renowned St. Anthony’s Catholic Church fish fry crew. I have heard many people say that St. Anthony’s fish fry is the best around. However, I was unsuccessful in getting that recipe out of him. That recipe is top secret.
Chad says the guys who do the breading don’t even know the secrets that occur in the frying station. The guys like to joke about this amongst themselves and it adds to the fun.
