Letter to the Editor: Once again, we see a disturbing pattern emerging in Ely and its surrounding areas: opposition to economic development on private property. The Silver Rapids Lodge project is a prime example. This proposed upgrade is a significant investment that promises to revitalize the property, benefiting the entire community. It will attract visitors, boost local businesses, and enhance Ely’s appeal.
History repeats itself. Similar resistance derailed the Ely RV park project, and I personally encountered fierce opposition to building a cabin on my Shagawa island property. Despite the challenges, I persevered and the cabin has become a beloved addition to the community.
Those who consistently oppose development are creating harmful divisions. I urge these individuals to reconsider their stance and examine their motivations. Lake County has notoriously strict land-use regulations. If the Silver Rapids project receives approval, it’s because it meets these stringent standards.
It’s time to embrace progress and support projects that will strengthen our community.
