Jarshaw fires a no-hitter in win for Junior Legion

Talen Jarshaw was more than dominant on Tuesday night.

The righthander for Ely’s Junior Legion baseball team went even beyond, throwing his first career no-hitter in a 10-0, six-inning victory over Taconite.

A senior-to-be at North Woods, Jarshaw has played summer baseball in Ely the last two years and has had his share of good outings on the mound.

But nothing matched this week’s performance in Marble, where he mowed down the Taconite hitters with ease.

Jarshaw fired his fastball by many hitters, recording 11 strikeouts out of 18 total outs.

The only Taconite scoring opportunity came in the second frame, when three walks loaded the bases, but Jarshaw fittingly escaped the jam with a strikeout.

After that, Jarshaw was all but untouchable and Ely cruised while improving to 7-4 for the summer.

Ely got plenty of offense as well in the victory.

Drew Johnson helped ignite things for Post 248, finishing with three hits, including a double, and two runs batted in.

Caid Chittum continued to swing a hot bat with two hits and two runs batted in, while Ben Leeson had a double among his two hits with two RBI as well.

Sean Merriman started things off at the top of the order and scored three times.

Ely was set to take on Chisholm on Thursday, after deadline, and the Junior Legion team travels to Barnum on Monday for two games with Barnum-Moose Lake-Willow River.

Those figure to be the last games for Ely until postseason play begins.

Ely will likely be seeded either first or second in the Northeast Substate and open playoff action at home on Sunday, July 28.

The tournament continues at Proctor July 30 and July 31 with the champion advancing to the state tournament set for Aug. 9-11 at St. Charles.

Ely finished second, behind Esko, in last year’s substate playoffs.

PITCHING GEM for Talen Jarshaw, shown here during the Ely Echo Midsummer Classic. On Tuesday, Jarshaw threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Ely’s Junior Legion team beat Taconite. Jarshaw attends North Woods but plays Legion ball in Ely.
