School contract agreements OK’d

Board inks deals with principal and confidential/supervisory units

The Ely School District has come to terms with a pair of bargaining units representing administrative and supervisory personnel.

At a special June 24 session, school board members voted 5-0, with Rochelle Sjoberg absent, to approve contracts with both the principals’ association and a confidential/supervisory employees association.

The deals cover K-12 principal Anne Oelke and assistant principal Jeff Carey, as well as facilities/transportation director Tim Leeson, finance manager Jordan Huntbatch and assistant to the superintendent Lori Westrick.

The contract agreements come on the heels of earlier pacts reached with district teachers as well as Oelke in her role as part-time superintendent.

Board chairman Ray Marsnik noted that the contracts are in line with those previously approved.

“We basically tried, and we did keep our contracts at that three percent increase,” said Marsnik.

The deal sets a $104,526 salary for the K-12 principal in 2024-25, with an increase to $107,662 the following year.

The assistant principal salary is set at $88,500 and $91,155, respectively.

The positions have differing duty days, with the K-12 principal set to work 215 days per year, while the assistant is on a 200-day contract.

The contract also caps the district contribution toward family health insurance premiums at $21,000 per year.

Insurance terms are similar with the confidential/ supervisory employees.

Salaries were set at $65,306 and $67,265 for the respective years for Leeson, while Westrick’s pay was set at $53,184 and $54,780.

Huntbatch will receive a salary of $84,255 in 202526, the first full year she will work as the district’s finance manager.

From July 1 until Sept. 30 of this year, she will retain her current post of payroll, benefits and finance coordinator while she continues to mentor with finance manager Spencer Aune. Huntbatch will be paid $61,875 to serve as finance manager from Oct. 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.

In other business, the board: • Approved 2024-25 Minnesota School Board Association dues of $6,995.

• Approved the third reading and adoption of model MSBA policies related to disability nondiscrimination, public and private personnel data, and harassment and violence.

• Authorized a three-year contract with IEA, Inc., for Environmental, Health and Safety Management Services.

• Received a report from Oelke that showed total enrollment at the end of the 2023-24 school year was 521 students.

• Approved a $1,657.60 reimbursement to the Ely Track Club for participation fees collected this spring.
