All-league, section honors for Wolves

Ely’s high school baseball team raked in a slew of postseason acclaim.

Juniors Caid Chittum and Ben Leeson both earned spots on the All-Section 7A team, as picked by area coaches, and the duo was joined by senior Drew Marolt on the All-Arrowhead Conference team.

A fourth Ely player, senior Elliot Levens, joined Chittum, Leeson and Marolt on the All-Iron Range Conference squad.

All played key roles on an Ely team that reached the final four in Section 7A.

Chittum, a three-time All-Arrowhead honoree, anchored the Ely defense at shortstop and was also one of 7A’s hottest hitters.

He compiled a sizzling .513 average for the spring, collecting 39 hits in 76 at bats with nine doubles, 21 runs batted in and a .593 on-base percentage.

Leeson was the Wolves’ starting catcher and threw out numerous runners attempting to steal. He also hit .327 with 12 RBI and an on-base percentage of .563.

Marolt battled injuries during his senior campaign yet still picked up two wins on the mound, recording 42 strikeouts and allowing only 25 hits in 37-and-one-third innings pitched. He also hit .250 with seven doubles, a home run and 18 RBI.

Levens was one of Ely’s more versatile players, starting at second base and first base at differing times of the year. He collected 20 hits in 65 at bats for a .308 averages, with five doubles and 18 RBI.

The Wolves went 12-12 this year and wound up fourth in 7A.
