Solum, relay nab fourths in 7A

The competition became even more fierce for the Ely Timberwolves at the Section 7A meet.

Yet a few members of the high school boys track team more than held their own.

Junior Silas Solum had Ely’s best individual finish of the day at the May 30 event at Duluth, placing fourth in the 800 meter run.

Meanwhile, a young Ely four-by-800 relay, featuring freshmen Brooks Brenny and Oliver Hohenstein, eighth-grader Wyatt Devine and junior Milo McClelland as the anchor, wound up fourth in 9:17.17.

Those were two big highlights for the Wolves, who were 14th among 22 teams as the section’s best gathered at Malosky Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Solum trimmed time in the 800 to take fourth in 2:07.95, missing third place by a mere .3 seconds.

“Silas had a really good day,” said Ely Head Coach Will Helms. “He was at 2:12 before the section meet and took four seconds-plus off his time.”

Solum also ran the anchor leg in Ely’s four-by-400 relay, which took fifth in 3:40.96.

“Even though they were in fifth, I think it was their best effort of the season,” said Helms. “They took a couple seconds off, beat Mesabi East who they had never beat before, and I think we were the six-seed coming in. And we were the first four-by-400 team out of the north subsection. If you look at the results, you get a feel of how tough the competition was coming out of the south.”

Solum anchored the four by- 400 which also included senior Leo Stalmer, junior Eli Olson and freshman Caleb Larson.

In the four-by-800, McClelland anchored the group to another season of local slowpitch softball league action.
