The Town of Morse board approved recreation donations totaling $9,500 at its May meeting.
Recreation funding was approved as follows:
• Ely All Night Graduation ($400)
• Ely Area Softball ($400)
• Ely Baseball Association ($700)
• Ely Blue Line ($400)
• Ely Community Education ($800)
• Ely Golf Club for Youth Golf League ($500)
• Ely Hoop Club ($400)
• Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club ($900)
• Ely Volleyball Net Club ($300)
• Ely Klown Band ($400)
• Ely Little League ($600)
• Ely Nordic Ski Club ($400)
• Ely Senior Center ($400) • Ely Softball League ($400)
• Ely TD Club ($400)
• End of the Road Archers ($400)
• Northeast Range Trap Club ($400)
• Northwoods Partners ($400)
• Prospector ATV Trail ($500)
• PTO ($400) Ely librarian Rachel Heinrich talked to the board about a catch that is used for dropping off books through an outdoor return.
She asked if it was okay to use Morse funds to replace the outdoor return at a cost of $1,639. The board approved the request.
In other business the board:
• Discussed the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting where a citizen used foul language.
• Noted Paige Maystadt cancelled the meeting on establishing a dog park. She has not asked to reschedule.
• Heard from clerk Nick Wognum who gave an update on the new Town of Morse website which is up but still being filled with data. He said the morsemn.gov designation is still in the works.
• Heard from road supervisor Len Cersine the township will not be putting calcium chloride on roads this year.
• Heard from supervisor Terry Soderberg on the short course he attended that was put on the Minnesota Association of Townships. He explained how over $800,000 was stolen from MAT through a phishing scheme. He said the Legislative Day for townships was a failure with only 80 people showing up. There are 55,500 miles of township roads in Minnesota which are 20 percent of the roads and yet there is very little funding provided by the state.
• Discussed a request from township road employee Butch Pecha of a need for new cutting edges for the grader and specified acertain type of blade. The board approve the $5,000 expenditure for blades and picks for the township grader.
• Pecha also said the seat in the grader is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. The board approved up to $2,000.
