CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) reports angling and boating activity was high for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. Fishing reports were generally better than previous weeks and a good number of larger fish were seen. CO Hudson Ledeen (Grand Marais #2) reports that many folks hit the woods and water for the holiday weekend. The fish were biting, but so were the bugs. Ledeen assisted the U.S. Forest Service with a rescue in the BWCA, where six people had capsized their canoes and became stranded. Luckily, all six people were wearing their life jackets. Enforcement action was taken for a variety of violations throughout the week.

Enforcement action for the week included ATV, offhighway motorcycle, and watercraft registration violations and operating on a closed trail. Some angling success was noted in the BWCAW despite high winds making for difficult canoeing. Numerous groups had capsized canoes and lost gear. An abnormally high number of water-related incidents in the area lately provide a stark reminder of theimportanceofusingsafetygearand not taking unnecessary risks.
