Letters to the Editor

…he broke his promise to exempt Social Security for our seniors

Dear Editor: Our area cleaned up on the backs of our citizens.

In a recent editorial in the Ely Echo it was written how well our area made out in the most recent legislative session. Much to the disappointment of many hardworking folks in our area was the failure to mention that it was really just our tax dollars being spent by St. Paul politicians on their favorite pet projects rather than being put back into the taxpayers pockets.

It was only two years ago that our state had a historic $17 billion surplus. What did our State Senator Grant Hauschild do then? He broke his promise to exempt Social Security Tax for our seniors, he raised the gas tax, not only last year but this year, next year and every year going forward, forever. He was the deciding vote to put a payroll tax on every employee in the state so their paycheck will become smaller. Lastly he voted to give a paltry refund back to very few Minnesotans.

Now while some investments made by the legislature this year are worth the praise. Let’s not get overjoyed and pat ourselves on the back about brand new ATV Trails or the Wolf Center when normal Minnesotans are struggling to put food on the table or gas in their car all of which was made harder by our current State Senator Grant Hauschild.
