At the Ely Public Library on Monday, June 3 summer reading starts for all ages. Stop by the library starting on this date for the earliest sign up for their summer reading programs. The children’s program for kids starting grades five and lower has a much different format this year (no keeping track of time this summer), so stop in to get the details. The middle school program for those starting grades six to nine will mimic a board game this year, so an early start is definitely a way to get ahead on earning more chances at the grand prize. The reading program for adults and senior high students will allow readers to choose their own goals. Summer reading is sponsored by Friends of the Library At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, June 5 at 11 a.m. it’s Get Crafty with Tricia: Kindness Rocks for all ages. Get ready to craft with Tricia and make some kindness rocks. The library will supply all of the supplies for you to help decorate the library’s new kindness garden. Please register in advance so that they have enough supplies for everyone. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

At the Ely Public Library on Friday, June 7 at 10:30 a.m. it’s Storytime with Smokey Bear for preschoolers. This will be the first storytime during the summer reading season, and they will have a special guest from the Forest Service to talk about Smokey Bear and fires in the forest. If your child is a bit nervous about people in costume, don’t worry…Smokey for this morning will be a large stuffed animal. This program is in cooperation with the United States Forest Service.

Dances Of Universal Peace will be offered Saturday, June 8 from 7-9 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal church, located at 715 S. Central Ave. in Ely. These are simple circle dances based on sacred phrases from the world’s major religions. All dances are taught by experienced leaders and musicians. Free will offering.

National Sauna Day will be held on Saturday, June 8 in Embarrass from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nelimark Homestead, Hwy. 21 and Saloe Road.Free admission, family friendly, rain or shine. Saunas on display and for sale along with sauna stoves and accessories. Pulled pork meal available, squeaky cheese, boot throwing game, baby goats. Tour of local saunas at 1 p.m. Music by Bill and Kate Isles from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The next gathering of the Ely Alliance of Braver Angels will take place on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. Future gatherings are scheduled for Tuesday, July 2; Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, August 15.

AAUW Ely, Northern Lakes Arts Association, & Ely Folk School present Shame Wrangler by Elizabeth Gade book release and signing June 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ely Folk School. After Gade’s reading, several local poets will share their work. Light refreshments provided.

Volunteer hunter safety instructor training class will be held on June 12 at 4:30 p.m. at the Babbitt Fire Hall. The contact person is regional training officer David Schottenbauer, [email protected]

Tools for Living With Fire is a one day event schedule for Saturday, June 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Vermilion Community College. Sessions on fire history, creating a land stewardship plan, activities for property owners and preparing for an emergency. Cost is $10 with proceeds to Ely Community Resource. Lunch provided.
