Smoke from fires in Hoyt Lakes and Canada affect Ely

Incident Name: Skibo Fire
Description: A wildfire was reported just north of St. Louis County Highway 110 (Forest Highway 11) and two miles east of Hoyt Lakes, MN yesterday at about 2:30pm. Multiple fires were strung out over about three miles from east of Hoyt Lakes to west of Skibo Road (Forest Road 120).
Location: Northeastern Minnesota, St. Louis County, Township 58 North, Range 13 & 14 West

DNR to host public information meeting in advance of PolyMet permit application

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is hosting a public information meeting on Tuesday, April 19, about PolyMet Mining, Inc.’s potential permit to mine application for its proposed NorthMet project. The meeting will be at Mesabi East High School, 601 North 1st St. W., Aurora, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.


Northshore Mining to re-open by May 15

Cliffs Natural Resources announced Monday it will be restarting iron ore pellet production at its Northshore Mining operation in Babbitt and Silver Bay by May 15, 2016.

The company said it is taking such action based on its domestic customers' demand for iron ore pellets and consistent with its previously announced production plans for the year.

Cliffs' Northshore Mining iron ore operation is comprised of a mine in Babbitt and a taconite pellet processing facility located in Silver Bay.

The operation employs approximately 540 employees.


Ecklund gains 3-A seat

A county commissioner from International Falls with deep roots in labor and the DFL party will be the Ely area’s next representative in St. Paul.
Rob Ecklund won a resounding victory in Tuesday’s House District 3A special election, racking up nearly 64 percent of the vote in a three-way race, and easily defeating Republican Roger Skraba of Ely and independent candidate Kelsey Johnson.


3A primary goes to Ecklund

Rob Ecklund, a Koochiching County commissioner from International Falls and a longtime DFL and labor leader, now has the inside track to be the Ely area's next representative in St. Paul.

Ecklund won a convincing victory Tuesday night in a four-way DFL primary in Minnesota House District 3A.

With all but two of the vast district's 99 precincts reporting, Ecklund had an 11 percentage-point lead over second-place finisher Bill Hansen of Tofte. Lagging far behind were International Falls business owner Eric Johnson and Ely council member Heidi Omerza.

Drowning victim found

Retired Ely businessman Mike Weinzierl, 75, died of an apparent drowning after his body was found Tuesday afternoon in Fall Lake.
Weinzierl had left his home on Fall Lake Monday for a day fishing trip via motor boat to Basswood Lake. He didn't return home that night and his family believed he may have camped out after experiencing motor troubles on Jackfish Bay.
Lake County authorities received a call at 8:17 p.m. Monday night that Weinzierl was missing.


Jesme to present view of Syria Tuesday at VCC Theater

Maggie Jesme of Ely has spent four months of the last year living and working with Syrian refugees in Turkey. She will share her experiences there at a presentation on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. in the Vermilion Community College Fine Arts Theater.
She stated, “If the war in Syria and refugee crisis spilling across Europe and the Middle East pull at your heartstrings the way they do mine, I encourage you to join me.
