Marianne Schwule, 79, of Babbitt, dies

Marianne Schwule, 79, of Babbitt, died August 10, 2017 at Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.
Marianne was born in Zwingenberg, Germany. After marrying her husband Warner Schwulke, a U.S. serviceman, they moved to the U.S. They lived in Des Plaines, Illinois until after his death. Marianne then moved to the Isabella area and later to Babbitt.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Central Manor in Babbitt on Saturday, September 9 from noon to 2 p.m. for all of her friends.


Richard L. Rosett, 83, of Embarrass, dies

Richard (Dick) Lloyd Rosett, 83, of Embarrass, MN, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, August 25, 2017, with his children by his side.

Dick was born on July 11, 1934 in Marshall County/Grand Plain Twp, MN. He graduated high school in Goodridge, MN. He worked on a farm in Goodridge. He married the love of his life, Dolly Gutterud, at the Silver Creek Church in Thief River Falls, MN before moving to Farmington, MI to begin building their family. They moved back to Goodridge for a time, and eventually made their home in Embarrass, MN where he worked for Erie Mining/LTV Steel until his retirement.

Dick loved the outdoors, avidly hunting on his land and fishing local waters. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, gardening and farming on his property.


Bryan Herbert “Herbie” Akins, 56, of Chisholm, formerly of Hoyt Lakes dies

Bryan Herbert “Herbie” Akins, 56, of Chisholm, formerly of Hoyt Lakes died Thursday, August 18, 2017 at the Fairview Mesabi Medical Center in Hibbing.
He was born on May 31, 1961 to Herbert Jr. and Dorothy (Kangas) Akins in Ely. Bryan grew up in Hoyt Lakes and attended Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School, graduating in 1979. Following high school, Bryan played semi-pro hockey for the Sioux City Musketeers. Later Bryan worked various construction jobs in both road and building construction. Bryan was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes He enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing. Bryan also loved his special dog, Shep III.


Amelia (Gorshe) Novak, 98, a lifelong resident of Ely, dies

Amelia (Gorshe) Novak, 98, a lifelong resident of Ely, passed away on Thursday August 3, 2017 at Carefree Living in Ely. She was born on September 28, 1918 in Ely to Carl (Charles) Gorshe and Mary (Zabasnik) Gorshe. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School.
Amelia devoted her life to raising her family and making her delicious walnut and apple poticas. She loved making all the traditional Slovenian dishes which her family and friends enjoyed eating. She was a member of the Western Slavonic Association (WSA) and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. .
She was preceded in death by her parents, son James, sisters: Mary Deyak, Caroline Likar, Frances Urbas, Jenny Mehelich, Angela Lobe, Julia Fink, her brother, Charles Gorshe, and her husband of 72 years, Charles Novak.


Catherine Lundein, 92, dies

Catherine Lundein, 92, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2017 at Riverbend Memory Care Facility in Rochester where she resided since 2016. Cathy was a long-time resident of Babbitt where she and her late husband, Archie, retired.
Cathy, a loving wife, mother, grandmother,great grandmother and friend was born on April 28, 1925 in Urbana, MO. Together with her husband, they owned and operated the 4 Seasons Supper Club in Virginia until 1985.
Cathy is survived by five children: Judy (David Barncord) Lundein of Tonganoxie, KS, Patricia Shaleen of Gilbert, Mark (Erika) Lundein of Boston, MA, Denise (Ed Martin) Lundein of Rochester, MN and Tracy (Tom Williams) Lundein of Yuma, AZ; six grandchildren: McKenna and Paige Lundein, Joshua and McKena Martin, Vanessa Ott and Amanda Fandino; five great-grandchildren: Nya, Nash and Moo Ott, Jacoby Barraza, Luna Martin; nieces and nephews.


Ann M. (Moravitz) Kantola, 94, of Conneaut, OH, dies

Ann M. (Moravitz) Kantola, 94, of Conneaut, OH, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the Villa at the Lake.
She was born on July 9, 1923 in Ely, Minnesota the daughter of Steve and Jenny (Antilla) Moravitz. Ann graduated from Ely Memorial High School. She was a wonderful home maker and enjoyed cooking and people raved about her pies. Ann loved walking and spending time outdoors watching the wildlife.
She is survived by her children: Kathleen (Mike) Kehoe, Charles (Donna Courtney) Kantola and Lawrence (Kelly) Kantola; brother, Eugene “Bud” (Sue) Morrow; grandchildren: Mick (Patty) Kehoe, Jeannie Givens, Steve (Karen) Kehoe and Patrick Kantola; six great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and her beloved dogs, Bandit and Luke.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Kantola; brothers, Robert, Lawrence, Jim and Bernie; and a sister, Laverne Chelesnik.
In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held.


Melvin “Memo” Mathew Janeksela, 74 of Winton, dies

Melvin “Memo” Mathew Janeksela, 74 of Winton, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the Boundary Waters Care Center.
Melvin was born to Matthew and Emmi (Hokanen) Janeksela on September 28, 1942 in Ely. He graduated from Ely Memorial High School and attended college in Albert Lee and Mesabi for welding. He worked for the USFS, Tenant, LTV, and owned the Timber Inn.
Melvin joined the Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War, but was honorably discharged due to injuries he sustained there.


Paulette (Polly) Krueger, 78, of Babbitt, dies

Paulette (Polly) Krueger, 78, of Babbitt, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 14, 2017 with her loving family at her side.
She was born on May 22, 1939 in Bemidji, MN. At an early age her family moved to Taconite, MN where her father was employed in the natural ore mines. They later moved to Babbitt where she completed high school graduating in Ely with class of 1957.
In 1958 she married Dave Kumferman and moved to the north side of Birch Lake where they raised their family. After her husband’s death, she worked in the home health care field for several years.
In 2006, she married Bill Krueger of Babbitt where they have made their home since that time.
Polly’s greatest pleasure came from spending time with her family, agate hunting along the North Shore, her flowers, fishing and playing cards with the gals.


Paulette Krueger, 78, of Babbitt, dies

Paulette Krueger, 78, of Babbitt, passed on Monday, August 14, 2017 at her home. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.


Lloyd G. Gustafson, 78, of Cook, dies

Lloyd G. Gustafson, 78, of Cook, died peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at the Cook Community Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1938, in Cook, the son of Gust and Elfva (Persson) Gustafson. He was a lifelong resident of Cook and Lake Vermilion area.

Lloyd graduated from Cook High School in 1956 and then completed two years at Virginia Junior College. He married Mary E. Ludlow on June 10, 1962, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, where he was a longtime member.

Lloyd worked at the family owned Standard Oil gas station in his earlier years, learning the rewards of a strong work ethic. The Gustafson family farm was special to Lloyd as were several businesses his grandfather pioneered at Cook.
