Marvel L. Klimek, 87, of Babbitt, dies

Marvel L. Klimek, 87, of Babbitt, died Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Carefree Living in Babbitt after her determined battle with dementia.
She was born April 10, 1929, in Long Prairie, MN, to Louis and Olive (Maland) Patzoldt. She grew up in Long Prairie and graduated from Long Prairie High School. On Nov. 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Elwin Klimek in Millerville, MN. Marvel spent her life operating businesses that she owned with her husband; Al’s Bus Lines in Babbitt, Klimek Enterprises, Red Carpet Motel and Klimek Mail.
Marvel was a volunteer and active in her community, was a previous board member at the Ely Hospital, a past Trail Administrator for Taconite Spur Snowmobile Trail System, a Cub Scout and Brownie leader, and a devout Christian. At the age of 65, she obtained her pilots license. She enjoyed painting, being at the cabin at Birch Lake, visiting the guests who stayed at the motel and especially spending time with her family.

Helen Mary (Skufca) Sampson, 88, of Fridley, dies

Helen Mary Sampson, 88, of Fridley, passed away on Sat., April 8, 2017. Helen is preceded in death by daughters Emily and Amy; parents, Joseph and Mary Skufca; brothers: Don and Joe. She is survived by children: Mark (Diana) Sampson and Carolyn Sampson (Kathy Connelly); grandsons, Adam and Judd (Jessica); 3 great-granddaughters. Memorial service will be held on Sat., 4/22/2017, at Miller Funeral Home, 6210 Hwy 65 NE, Fridley, MN, at 11 AM with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Fairview Hospice or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

Arcell E Huseby, 91, of Babbitt dies

Arcell E Huseby, 91, of Babbitt passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Carefree Assisted Living in Babbitt.
Arcell was born January 22, 1926 in Gary, MN to Arthur and Elvira Stephenson. Arcell married Almer Huseby on January 15, 1947. They moved to Babbitt in January of 1956. She was an avid snowmobiler and enjoyed camping with her family and even an occasional elk hunting trip.
She enjoyed her grandchildren and being a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her four sons, Mark (Julie) of Babbitt, MN; Lynn (Diane) of Lake Charles, LA; Dale of Rosemount, MN; and Gary of Roberts, WI. Five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and sister.
Due to her wishes, no service will be held. Burial will take place at a later date.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Rhoda Anderson, age 99, of Ely, dies

Rhoda Georgine Anderson, 99, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2017, at the Carefree Living Center in Ely, MN, surrounded by family.
Rhoda was born on December 9, 1917, in Hawley, MN to Anna and Oscar Askelson. She attended country school and worked on neighboring farms until her marriage to Gordon Anderson on June 15, 1941, in Borup, MN. They farmed in the Twin Valley area until 1956 and then moved to the Iron Range where Gordon worked for U.S. Steel until his retirement in 1975. After Gordon’s death in 1986, Rhoda returned to Twin Valley where she lived for several years before moving to Ely to be near family.
Rhoda enjoyed homemaking and was known for her excellent breads and rolls. She and Gordon enjoyed gardening, fishing and picking blueberries together and loved spending time with their grandchildren.

Georgine Frances (Larson) Koschak, 83, of Ely, dies

Georgine Frances (Larson) Koschak, 83, of Ely, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Carefree Living in Babbitt, MN.
She was born September 29, 1933 in Ely to George Axel and Frances Elizabeth (Peyla) Larson. She attended school here. She married John Robert (Bob) Koschak on September 19, 1953.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved flower arranging, gardening, crafts, sewing - she sewed quilts for all her grandchildren. She loved entertaining in her home and was very welcoming, cooking and feeding many. She was a devoted member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gerald Larson and grandson Jarred Hinzmann.

Peggy Lee Beyer-Anderson, 55, of Winton dies

PEGGY LEE BEYER-ANDERSON, 55, of Winton passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Peggy was born on January 7, 1962 at the Ely Bloomenson Hospital in Ely, MN. Her first years were spent living with her family at Bob Holden’s logging camp off of the Old Tomahawk Road. In 1966 the family moved to Winton, where she spent the rest of her life.

Peggy was a member of one of the largest classes from Ely High School, graduating in 1980. Many classmates will remember her as the Ely Timberwolf mascot during her time there.

Peggy was an avid outdoors woman. She loved to fish, hunt, pick berries, anything and everything that had to do with being one with nature. It is well documented amongst all in her family that she nearly always was the first to catch a fish, and usually the one who caught the most. Just this previous deer firearms season, with cancer ravaging her body, she got her buck hunting with brother Milt.

Rev. Evert Erling Tornfelt, 90, dies

Rev. Evert Erling Tornfelt, 90, went to be with the Lord April 2, 2017 at his home in Redmond, WA. Born in Cleveland, OH on October 13, 1926 to Erling R. Tornfelt and Anna Marie (Tiderman) Tornfelt. He moved with his parents to Ely, MN, where he attended elementary school. Graduating from Ely Memorial High School in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. After WWII he attended Minnesota Bible College, University of Minnesota (champion springboard diver and swim team captain). Then worked for General Electric in the field of atomic energy in Richland, WA. There he met Margaret Moe of East Stanwood, WA. They married in 1952. Evert felt called to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ and with Margaret as supportive companion, he began ministry with the Assemblies of God fellowships. He taught Sociology at Northwest College in Kirkland, Jersey City State College and Chapman College in Anchorage, in addition to working for the U.S.
