Jonathan Michael Maki, 28, dies

Jonathan Michael Maki, 28, of Roseau, Minn. died on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. He went home to the Lord.
Jonathan was born in Ely, on April 24, 1986, to Michael V. Maki and Deborah N. (Maki) Prahl. He grew up in Winton. Jonathan was a star baseball player during his school years and a loyal Minnesota Twins fan. He enjoyed fishing, camping, golfing, and especially hanging out with his best friend, Brent Goodin. He dearly loved his friends and cat, Xerxes.
Jonathan was a proud employee of Polaris Industries. For all who knew him, it wasn’t just a job, it was where he made many treasured friends. He will be remembered as a gentle and kind man. He would always think of others instead of himself; and was always there to lend a helping hand. Blessed be his memory.

Agnes Jo “Nez” Artisensi, 70, passed away on February 27, in Gilbert, AZ, with her devoted husband and loving sons at her side.
She was a beautiful, elegant, and compassionate woman whose priority in life was her family - her husband John and sons, John and James - who received and returned her never ending love.

Ilona Maria (Mills) Banovetz, 88, dies

Ilona Maria (Mills) Banovetz, 88, died Monday, February 23, 2015. She was born in Ely, MN, on Oct. 4, 1927, and was a gregarious Finn who appreciated respites of solitude. With her boisterous laugh, gift to gab, and sincerity she taught others to laugh often, stoke their intelligence, and reflect with depth.

As an adolescent, Ilona held great pride in her family’s business, Mills Clothing. She was devoted to her family, studies, swimming and cheerleading. She received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from St. Olaf College, and attended Mount Holyoke College for graduate studies.

John “Jack” M. Kivisto of Babbitt dies

John “Jack” M Kivisto, 79, of Babbitt MN passed away February 24, 2015 at home with his wife and children by his side. Jack was born September 15, 1935, in Deerwood MN to John Jacob Kivisto and Flora Clara (Palmer) Kivisto. He was the only son out of four children.
He graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1954. After graduating, he served with the National Guard and United States Army for a total of five years. He married Janet (Fritz) Kivisto on August 2, 1958 in Waukesha Wisconsin. They lived in Crosby, MN for a few years while Jack worked in the Cayuna Iron Range Mines. When the job there ended, they moved to Babbitt, where he worked in the Mesabi Range Mines before retiring in 1984.
Jack loved his wife and best friend Janet very much. They did everything together and enjoyed traveling. Jack was a big tease and was loved by many.

John R. Montgomery, 77, of Ely, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital in Ely.
John or “Jack” as we all knew him, was born on October 12, 1937 to Edwin and Virginia Montgomery in Hill City MN. Jack married Phyllis Lamke on June 3, 1961 in Hill City. He passed away at home from a heart attack on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 after having a fun day trip out with his wife. This came unexpectedly as he had been feeling good and was excitedly making plans on “going to where it’s warmer” within the next few weeks for a vacation!

Barbara Gail (Lundeen) Prochnio, 70, of Wheat Ridge, CO dies

Barbara Gail (Lundeen) Prochnio, 70, of Wheat Ridge, Colorado was born in Ely, Minnesota on September 15, 1944 and passed away on February 17, 2015. She was elected Ely Snow Queen in 1962
Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Joachim Prochnio, Wheat Ridge, CO; her son Kirk (Kimberly) Prochnio, Wheat Ridge; her sister Karen Lundeen, Tucson, AZ and nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Emil and Helen Lundeen, sister Loretta Simonson and brother Gary Lundeen.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Community of Christ Church, 3780 Ward Road, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. With reception to immediately follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family recommends donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) under the Barbara G. Prochnio Memorial Fund.

Marilyn Irene Pavelich, 81, dies

Marilyn Irene (Setula) Pavelich, 81, passed over on Saturday, February 14, 2015 in Princeton, MN. She was born to Finnish parents John and Ina (Hill) Setula in Austin, MN and a graduate of Washington HS in Brainerd, MN and the U of M where she was a member of the synchronized swimming team and earned her degree in Physical Education.
A resident of Babbitt, MN for over 40 years, Marilyn maintained an active community role in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Friends of the Library, Babbitt Library Board, Babbitt Figure Skating Club, Eastern Star, P.E.O., was an avid outdoorswoman and the embodiment of ‘SISU’.
She will continue to be honored as a loving, caring, and devoted wife, friend, mother and grandmother. Survived by her husband of 56 years, Joseph, son Mark (Kathleen Barrett), daughter Tanya (Cory Bennett) as well as grandchildren: Sean, Sascha and Nicolai. Memorial Tributes at alz.org preferred. Services will be held Sat., March 7 at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, MN.
