Janet C. Grahek, 89, of Ely, dies

Janet Carolyn Takavitz Grahek, 89, left this earth to join her beloved husband, John, on October 2, 2017. She leaves behind her daughter, Darlene Grugal, her son Jon Grahek (Eileen) and her grandchildren Ashley and Andy Grahek. She was preceded in death by her husband and son-in-law, Rich Grugal.
Janet was born in Ely on October 18, 1927. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School and was married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on August 10, 1946. The last of the Takavitz siblings, she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Our mother taught us kindness and generosity and was a powerful example of what it means to be a strong, loving woman.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Edward Ciriacy, Dr. Joseph Schwinghamer, and Jeanann Tjader, CNP and the staff of the Boundary Waters Care Center for their kindness and compassionate care of our mother.

Christopher Mackey, 37, formerly of Las Vegas, dies

Christopher Jeffrey Mackey, 37, of Ely, MN, formerly of Las Vegas, NV and Virginia, MN - born April 10, 1980 - died September 29, 2017.
Christopher graduated from Virginia High School in 1998. For several years he was employed in the Twin Cities, where he met his wife Angela Stitt. They were joined in marriage on Oct 6, 2014 and soon after moved to Las Vegas.
Christopher was a hard working man who loved his family and his country. He found his purpose in life when he met Angela and they built a life together in Las Vegas where they enjoyed spending time with their dog “Peanut.”
Christopher is survived by his mother Susan Mackey, sister Lynn Gregory, father-in-law Ray Stitt, grandmother Mary Mackey, aunts and uncles: Brian Mackey, Jeff (Shelley) Mackey, Kathy (Ron) Jenkins and Krissy (Dave) Johnston, cousins: John Mackey, Lucas and Lily Mackey, Kaylyn and Kassi Jenkins and Derek, Marissa and Marly Johnston.

Gene "Bud" Morrow, 82, longtime resident of Orinda California and Ely Minnesota, dies

Gene "Bud" Morrow, 82, longtime resident of Orinda California and Ely Minnesota, died September 27, 2017 with his family at his side after a battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Gene was born January 11, 1935 and raised in Ely Minnesota. He was the youngest of seven children of Steve and Jenny Moravitz. He attended elementary, high school and Vermillion Junior College in Ely, before going on to graduate from the University of Minnesota Duluth, with a degree in business and economics. From the age of sixteen he was a fishing guide for Bill Zup Sr. He loved the outdoors and found guiding was a great way to meet people and earn money to put himself through school. While waiting to be drafted, he taught business classes at a school in Embarrass, Minnesota. He spent two years in the army and was selected to be a cryptographer, stationed in New York where he discovered the city life.

James Francis Brobin, 82, dies

James Francis Brobin, 82 of New Brighton, MN. Born Feb. 15, 1935, Jim lost his year-long battle with ALS on September 16, 2017. Preceded in death by parents Ann and Red Brobin and brother Robert. Jim grew up hunting and fishing, graduating from Ely High School. He married Sandra Meyer after they both graduated from St. Cloud Teachers’ College where they met. Jim started teaching at Mounds View HS in 1958 and was a fixture in the Biology Department for 34 years. At Mounds View, he was also instrumental in building a strong and successful swimming program. Jim retired in 1992 enjoying world travel with Sandy including many warm winters in Mazatlán. His booming voice and outsized personality will be missed by family, friends and the countless students and athletes who were influenced by “Coach B.”

Peter J. Scheuer, 59,dies in China

Peter Joseph Scheuer, 59, died Sept. 21 in Beijing, China. He was born in Winton, MN on Oct. 4, 1957.
He was a graduate of Ely Memorial HIgh School, St. Olaf College, and the University of Minnesota Law School. He was employed by Bayer Health Care - China, where he headed the Beijing Legal Dept.
He is survived by his wife XiaoXiao, and children Bronte, Brandise, Peter Jr (Tom), and Eugene. Other survivors include parents, Robert and Katherine Scheuer and brothers Karl (Rose), Paul, and John, and sisters Gretchen (Brad) Bensen, Veronica (Warren) Olsen, Anna (Keith) Larson, and Nichole (Duane) Farkas.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Mary and Eugene Scheuer, Gretchen and Nicholas Rauscher, uncles Father Benedict and Father James Scheuer and aunt Mary Jo Rauscher.

Gary Allen Shaver, 79, dies

Gary Allen Shaver, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 23, 2017.
He was born on July 5, 1938 in Mankato, Minnesota. Gary was the son of Victor and Emma (Carlson) Shaver. He graduated from St. Clair High School in 1956, and Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis in 1960, earning a degree in Industrial Electronics. Throughout his life he lived in a variety of places, such as St.Clair, Minneapolis, St.Cloud, Ely, Bemidji, MN, and has resided in Superior, WI for the past 30 years.

Carol A. Blair, 79, of Ely, dies

Carol Ann Blair, 80, born on October 5, 1937, to Peter and Mary (Terzini) Preblich, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017, at the Boundary Waters Care Center.
After staying home to raise her children, Carol returned to the workforce at Pizza Hut for many years. She enjoyed the outdoors, her dog Toby, spending time with her grandchildren, and reading.
Survivors include her husband Carl; daughter Cindy (David) Dahl of Duluth; son Bryon (Jamie) Blair of Hastings; and grandchildren Miranda, Alexandra, and Jacob; sister Donna (Ralph) Karlinski of Centerville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Frank Eugene and Peter; sister Rose Marie Ahlfs, and brotherin-law Darrol Ahlfs.
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 6, 1 p.m., at Kerntz Funeral. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Angeline Mary Andrew, 88, of St. Paul, formerly of Ely, dies

Angeline Mary Andrew, 88, of St. Paul, formerly of Ely, died Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Northfield Hospital in Northfield, MN.
Angeline was born August 11, 1929 in Bovey, MN to George and Julia (Adlesich) Velcheff Sr. She was a graduate of Ely High School. She worked as a Job Service Coordinator for the State of Minnesota for many years in Ely and later in St. Paul. On February 14, 1998 she married William Andrew and resided in Temple, TX. After William passed, she moved back to St. Paul.
She was a member of St. Louis King of France Church in St. Paul. She enjoyed helping others, spending time with her friends and Velcheff family barbecues. Golfing, working crossword puzzles and listening to polka music were some of her favorite pass times.
Survivors include her sister, Helen Grivette of Hoyt Lakes and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Charles Starkman, 90, dies

Kenneth Charles Starkman, 88, died peacefully on Tuesday September 19, 2017 at Southview Senior Living Center in West St. Paul, MN.
Ken was born in Ely, MN to Charles and Lillian “Aiti” (Rajamaki) Starkman on October 23, 1928.
He married Alice (Keeling) Starkman on February 15, 1958 in St. Paul, MN.
Ken was a past owner of The Chain Saw Shop, Starkman Oil and the Tamarack Resort on Burntside Lake all located in Ely as well as Starky’s Convenience Store in Babbit, MN.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Masons, Shriners and the American Legion.
Ken enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a passion for all things horse racing. He spent many hours in his retirement handicapping thoroughbreds.
Ken is survived by his wife Alice Starkman, sons: Ken Starkman and Jeff (Jessica) Starkman, sisters: Laverne Kuzma and Karen (Rich) Jiacik and grandsons: Hunter Starkman and Garrett Starkman.

Warren E. Esterberg, age 68 of Greenfield, MN, dies

Warren E. Esterberg, age 68 of Greenfield, MN passed away Monday, September 18, 2017. Warren was born and raised in Ely, MN and received his BME from the U of M. Preceded in death by parents, Werner and Aune. Survived by Laura, his wife of 45 years; 3 sons, Erin (Niki), Erik (Megan) and Adrian; grandchildren, Emma, Tyler, Blake, Zaya, Tanner and Lainey; brothers, Warner, Allen, Everett, Norman, Larry and Dean; many other loving family members and friends.
Memorial Service 11 am Saturday at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 5005 Northwest Blvd., Plymouth. Visitation 1 hour prior to service at church. Continue to celebrate Warren’s life with family and friends at the Medina Ballroom from 2-6 pm Saturday. Interment Ely Cemetery at a later date.
