Ely Echo Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest for 2018 begins now, ends March 25

by Anne Swenson -

The first entry for 2018 came in from Jeff Hoffman, Valparaiso, IN who guessed April 24 at 1:15 p.m.
Although the early morning on Friday April 14, 2017 brought frost to the Ely area, the ice on Shagawa Lake finally parted and Official Ice Out was called at 8:33 a.m.. that day.
The Ely Echo Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the northside of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
Off by one hour, 27 minutes on April 14, but nonetheless the winner was Jack Hautala of Winton, taking the first place prize of $100 in a GEL Gift Certificate with 10 a.m.
Second place went to Julie Faltinson, Eden Prairie, MN which gained her a $50 Ely Echo Gift Certificate. James Hedin, Duluth took third place and the $25 GEL Gift Certificate. These prizes will be repeated for winners in the 2018 contest.
For the times with duplicates, only the earliest entry wins. There are no duplicate prizes. In 2018 vote quickly, but only one guess is allowed.
Each entry MUST have a complete name, address and phone number as well as the date and time of day for the guess. Incomplete entries are thrown out. Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win prizes.
Only one entry per person, no more than three entries per household application by mail or email.
