Joseph “Joe” Osaben, 96, of Ely, dies

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 1:00 p.m at Kerntz Funeral Home

Joseph Frank Osaben, 96, of Ely, passed away peacefully October 25, 2017 while under the loving care of the staff at Carefree Assisted Living in Ely. He was born in Ely on January 11, 1921 to Frank and Josephine Osaben. He was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. During the depression, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp at a camp in Isabella, MN. He served in the Coast Guard in the Aleutian Islands during WW II. After the war he worked for several years underground in the Zenith mine in Ely. He then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and graduated from the carpentry program. He returned to Ely and worked at Reserve Mining in Babbitt until his retirement in 1984.
Joe was a lifelong outdoorsman and enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing with friends and family. In his later years, his passion was tending his remarkable vegetable garden, picking wild blueberries, and visiting with his many friends.
As a bachelor, he lived his entire life in the house where he was born and took loving care of his mother Josephine in her later years. Through generations, “Uncle” Joe freely shared his time, talents and values enriching the lives of his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Josephine, and brother Frank; nephews Jack Osaben and Thomas Osaben; niece Carla (Quackenbush) Mattson; brother-in-law Carl Mattson and sister-in-law Barbara Osaben. He is survived by sisters Maryen Mattson and Margaret Rawland; nephews George (Valerie) Osaben, Patrick Osaben, Greg (Patricia) Osaben, Peter Mattson, and Frank Rawland; nieces Anne (Pat)Rawland Gabriel and Sarah Rawland; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 1:00 p.m at Kerntz Funeral Home with visitation taking place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Family services have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
