Stefani Strezishar, 84, of Babbitt, dies

STEFANI (SCHAGER) STREZISHAR 84 passed away July 8that the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital after a short illness. Stefani was born July 20, 1932 to Johann and Rosa (Roschitch) Schager in Maierle, Slovenia. While living in various displacement camps in Austria with her mother and siblings, her aunt and uncle, Mary and John Rom, sponsored her to come to Ely, Minnesota. She arrived in New York aboard the USNS General Harry Taylor on August 7, 1951. She married Thomas Strezishar April 25, 1953 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and began their family. They moved to Babbitt in 1964. She was employed by Babbitt State Bank and then as a baker for Zup’s Store. Steffi put her family and God above everything. She was an active member of St. Pius Catholic Church.
She enjoyed sewing and gardening, her garden being the envy of many. She also loved to cook and bake for her family, friends and church. Coffee and home baked goods were always offered and no one ever left hungry. Her walnut and apple poticas were enjoyed by many.
Steffi is survived by her children James, Babbitt; Veronica (Richard) Ahlfs, Crandon, WI; Theresa (Michael) Ostazeski, Morton, IL; and Thomas (Michelle), East Grand Forks, MN; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She is further survived by sisters Emi (Richard) Ross, Vancouver, BC, Canada; Paula (Joseph) Baltich, Ely; brother Josef (Rose) Schager, Nestelbach, Austria; and many nieces and nephews.
Steffi was preceded in death by her husband Tom; two daughters Rose Mary and Cynthia; brothers Hans and Fr. Matthias Schager; sister Herta and her parents.
Visitation will be 10:00 on July 15, 2017 at St. Pius Catholic Church, Babbitt, MN. The mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11:00. Funeral arrangement have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home. www.kerntzfh@frontier.com
