Walter Alan Tomlinson, 92, of Ely, dies

Walter Alan Tomlinson, 92, of Ely, was born in Harvey, IL on October 21, 1924 and passed away at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely on April 14, 2017.
Walter served in World War II and was seriously injured in November 1944, for which he received the Purple Heart. After the war, he worked for Chicago Federal Savings and Loan for many years, advancing to Executive Vice President. He and his wife were both active members of the Apollo Music Club of Chicago, the St. Paul Community Church choir and were both avid golfers. They joined and were active members of the Olympia Fields Country Club.
They began vacationing in the Ely area in 1962 on the recommendation of some friends and enjoyed it so much they returned every year with family to enjoy the fishing and nature. In 1990, they retired and moved to Ely. They continued their golfing at the Ely Golf Club and singing in church and community choirs.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Clara Tomlinson, brother, Kent Tomlinson, sister Mary Lou Tomlinson DeBacher, and wife, Ruby Pearson Tomlinson.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Jeanne, Don and Margie, Scott and Jacqueline, Gordon and Sue; grandchildren, Ben (Erin), Laura (Wilhelm) Harm, Amy, Kent, Erik, Kyle, Christine, Julie (Trey) Bugner; and five great-grandsons, Tristan, Sean, Liam, Emmet and Robert.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ely United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter Tomlinson’s name may be made to the Ely Northwoods Partners Memory Care Program.
